OUR TRIP FROM PORVORIM (GOA) TO JOG FALL AND KEMMANUGUNDI HILL STATION

Members:
Family 1: Anand, Renu, Anushka
Family 2: Sameer, Shreya, Yash

Day 1: 22-09-2009

We consisted of two families (4 adults and two children) and travelled in a Ford Fiesta. The route was Porvorim – Margao – Canacona – Karwar – Honnavar ( All along NH-17). At Honnavar we took a left along the NH – 206 road leading to Jog Falls/ Talaguppa / Sagar / Shimoga.

We stopped at Jog Falls and checked into the PWD Inspection Bungalow. The Bungalow was relatively empty at that time of the year and we got two double bed rooms without prior booking. The contact details are:

PWD INSPECTION BUNGALOW
Phone : +91-8186-344333
As we were pleased with the accommodation at the PWD Bungalow, we did not pursue accommodation in other Resorts/ Hotels. These details could be checked up on the internet.

Day 2: 23-09-2009

We took details on nearby points that could be visited and the next morning (around 3 points) we proceeded to various points near Jog Falls within 4 Km radius. After these points, we went to the British Bungalow to get a good view of Jog Falls from the top.
After having lunch we started our journey to Kemmanugundi.
The route is via NH – 206: Jog Falls to Talaguppa – Sagar – Shimoga – Bhadravati – Tarikere. At Tarikere we took a right turn via SH – 57 leading to Kemmanugundi.
We reached Kemmanugundi at around 7:00 p.m. and found the area to be foggy. Visibility was reduced.
We checked in at the State owned Horticulture Guest House. The contact details are as follows:
DIRECTORATE of Horticulture Department, Lalbagh, Bangalore-560004
Telephone: 080-26579231 (Between March 15 to July 15)
OR
Special Officer - Krishnarajendra Hill Station, Kemmannagundi Post, Tarikere Taluk, Chickmagalur district.
Telephone: 08261-237126 (Between July 16 to March 14)
As we were pleased with the accommodation at the Horticulture Guest House, we did not pursue accommodation in other Resorts/ Hotels. These details could be checked up on the internet.

Day 3: 24-09-2009

We had a walk around the Horticulture Guest House and drove the Ford Fiesta along a mud track. Even though a couple of us got out of the vehicle only for a minute each, we had leeches on us. Due to time constraint, the stay could not be prolonged and we started back to Goa at around 12.00 p.m.

It was informed to us that there were jeeps available near the Horticulture Guest House and these could take us to nearby falls (Hebbe Falls, etc.) on payment.

Other Details:

The distance covered from Porvorim to Kemmanugundi and back including the visits to the points was around 940 kms.

SOME OBSERVATIONS CARRIED OUT:

•If not aware or sure about accommodation status or type of accommodation, please ensure that one reaches early evening, so that other Guest House/s could be checked out.
•Please plan the road travel expecting bad patches (extra time required to negotiate). An extra time of around one to one and half hour would accommodate for bad road patches and tea break/s.
•Please ensure to try and reach Kemmanugundi between 5 to 6 p.m. especially during winter. Also, early arrival would help in fixing up of the menu for dinner (veg/non-veg).
•We enjoyed the vegetarian food cooked at the restaurant of the Horticulture Guest house at KEMMANUGUNDI. Please discuss with the restaurant incharge / booking incharge about the timings, type of food available. At KEMMANUGUNDI, the details of jeep availability, timings, fare could be discussed with the booking incharge. Please discuss with the Guest House incharge/keeper in advance about availability of milk/tea/coffee/hot water, etc. at the Guest House as per need at JOG FALLS as well as at KEMMANUGUNDI.
•It is preferable to carry own food items / drinks in case of specific tastes, as it would be difficult to arrange for food, etc. in the late evening at Kemmanugundi.
•The experience in the Ford Fiesta was great.
•Due to time constraints, we did not visit places around JOG FALLS and KEMMANUGUNDI. In case the trip is planned well in advance, some time (day/s) could be considered to visit surrounding areas also.

Check the downhillresort, it is right below the Chembra mountains. It has 2 Bungalows with 3 bedrooms each and attached bathrooms. Great place for families and friends to relax. A personal cook who can cook whatever you want is available. Ooty is just 1 hour drive, so stay here and visit ooty, as ooty has gone to dogs now with the crowd. We insisted Water boiled with wood, what a feeling to have a bath with the wood smell. When the mist comes down from the mountain, its heaven.
